Getting ready · Before the first Father's Day
The first Father's Day
A recording of her father speaking to her at eighteen is worth more than any present he could be given today.
Record the change, not the date
The first Father's Day with the child in the house marks a change of role that does not happen twice. That is what is worth keeping: how it was before, how it is now, and what changed in the person who became a father this year.
Simple ideas
- The photo of three generations, whenever that is possible.
- A print of her foot or her hand on paper, with the date.
- A letter written by him, for her to read as an adult, about this first year.
- A video of the two of them doing the silliest thing of the day: changing a nappy, watching the match, asleep on the sofa.
- The photo of the two of them asleep, which is the classic and is a classic for a reason.
Whoever takes the photos needs to appear too
The same rule applies: ask someone, or use the timer. A collection with no father in the photos tells the wrong story, and it is the most common mistake of all.
The question that works every year
Record a short video answering: "what did I learn this year?" Every Father's Day, the same question. It is the yearly interview, from the other side of the camera.

The first Easter
Probably no chocolate yet. But the photo with the little ears and the Easter letter last far longer than the egg.

The first Mother's Day
The photo that almost never exists is the mother with the baby, because she is the one taking the photos. Ask someone. Today is the day.
